Balancing an RC glider correctly is one of the easiest ways to improve flight performance and reduce crashes—especially for beginners.
This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to set the CG properly, even if you’ve never done it before.
Step 1: Find the Recommended CG
Check:
- Manual
- Manufacturer website
- Inside wing markings
If unavailable:
- Start at 30% of wing chord from the leading edge
Mark the CG on both wings with a pencil or tape.
Step 2: Install Everything First
Before balancing:
- Battery installed
- Receiver installed
- Canopy on
- Motor and prop attached (if electric)
CG must be checked in flight-ready configuration.
Step 3: Balance the Glider
Finger Method (Most Common)
- Place two fingers under the CG marks
- Lift gently
- Observe tilt
Balance Stand (Optional)
- More precise
- Useful for larger gliders
Step 4: Adjust the CG
If Nose-Heavy:
- Move battery slightly rearward
- Avoid removing nose weight at first
If Tail-Heavy:
- Move battery forward
- Add small nose weight if necessary
Use small changes — 5–10 mm at a time.
Step 5: Recheck and Secure
Once balanced:
- Secure battery firmly
- Ensure nothing can shift in flight
- Recheck CG one final time
Test Flight Verification
On first flight:
- Launch gently
- Observe glide
- Trim minimally
A correctly balanced glider:
- Glides smoothly
- Doesn’t balloon or dive
- Requires minimal trim
Common Beginner Balancing Mistakes
- Flying without rechecking CG
- Adding too much weight at once
- Ignoring battery movement
- Trimming instead of fixing CG
Quick Beginner Rule
Fix CG before touching trims or throws.
